Trainee Journalists

Trainee reporters spent time at Brooke Weston as part of their University journalism course. A film crew was at Brooke Weston to cover the English A-level study day and edit footage into a three-minute piece. They spent hours capturing the activities at College and were accompanied by lecturer, Richard Hollingum, who teaches the BA journalism course at the University of Northampton. The three-year course equips students to work in multi-media to reflect the changing face of journalism. As well as writing articles, filming news items and delivering professional radio pieces, students also learn about politics and reporting laws. They also complete a work experience placement with many working on their local papers for a minimum of two weeks, although some have worked abroad on American and Swedish college campuses.

The students filmed at Brooke Weston as part of their news assignment coursework, where they have to file a story once a week. Mr Hollingum, a former radio journalist, said: 'The weekly assignments work really well because it means students understand the pressures of being a journalist and they complete a good portfolio of work.'
