Bags made from reclaimed materials

Design students at Brooke Weston have really got to grips with eco-issues by making their own bags from reclaimed materials. The Year 9 students have recycled a wide array of textiles to make the stunning collection as part of their GCSE Design Technology curriculum. Last term they learned the basics of dyeing, batik and embroidery and now they have let their imaginations run wild to create their own, individual masterpieces.

Design Technology teacher, Kyria Foster said: 'The students were limited as they had to source their own materials. Some brought items like jumpers and bridesmaid dresses from home and then they just got on with designing their items. Some are made from fur fabric and others are satin or tweed. They are all so different and I am really impressed with the results.'

This is the first year that students have worked with textiles after the College recently took delivery of a batch of sewing machines. The project reflects the trend for eco-friendly and reusable bags which had shoppers queuing for hours to get their hands on one of Anya Hindmarch's 'I Am Not A Plastic Bag' creations.
