First Aiders
Year 9 students got to grips with first aid dummies as they learned resuscitation techniques. The first aid course was taught as part of the Health and Safety aspect of Applied Science GCSE. The session, led by Carol Coleman of St John Ambulance, showed how to deal with an unconscious casualty and how to administer CPR (cardio-pulmonary resuscitation).
Students were given a talk, shown a video and reminded of the ABC of resuscitation:
- A: Keep the airway open
- B: Check the breathing and resuscitate if necessary
- C: Check the circulation
Student, Ria Goff, was the first to demonstrate on one of the 'Little Annie' resuscitation dolls and then the students were split into groups and they tried out the lifesaving skills for themselves. All the successful students were awarded a 'Heartstart certificate.' The four-strong team at St John Ambulance demonstrate the technique to a staggering 18,000 children per year in schools across Northamptonshire, as well as visiting prisons, companies and community groups.
