Mr Technology works Minor miracles

Brooke Weston's new assistant principal in charge of technology and IT likes to have things running properly.

Nowhere is this truer than when it comes to old cars. Chris Sumpter has a passion for turning old wrecks into vehicles that miraculously gleam and run like new. His fascination with cars comes from his rally driver father. He calculates he, his father and his two brothers have between them restored no less than 400 Morris Minors.

It's not just family cars like the Morris that he is interested in. Much of his current spare time is spent lavishing love and attention on a Gilbern Invader - a rare Welsh sports car that he is determined should once again be in pristine condition. This year-long project follows hard on the heels of an equally thorough nut and bolt restoration of a Jensen Healey.

Although cars are a passion, they are not his only form of transport. He's a keen cyclist and rides for Rockingham Forest Wheelers - whose members include Year 12 students and prize-winning cyclists Carl Summerlin and Richard Smith. That cycling helps him keep fit for rugby - he played for the England Under-19s and currently plays for Corby Town.

Just to prove he's a total all-rounder, Chris Sumpter is a keen theatre set designer, whose designs have graced several stages including the Haymarket at Leicester. To complete his list of hobbies, he designs furniture.

Chris has joined Brooke Weston from Huxlow School where he was head of art, design and technology and was responsible for the school's IT facility.

He has also taught at Stamford High School for Girls, where he was responsible for design and technology, including textiles and photography.

He is a local lad who was born at Market Harborough and educated at Kingswood School, Corby, and read technology and education for his degree at Loughborough University.

His aim at Brooke Weston is to ensure that the College has the best technology department in the country. "Technology should be relevant, fun and challenging," he says, adding that he wants to see links between science and technology inside the College become stronger. "The ethos should be to achieve success the right way. If students are inspired by technology then we know we've made it. "
