Prospectus 2006-2007
Important Updates
Since this prospectus was printed there have been some important changes. These changes arise because Brooke Weston College (CTC) is changing to an 'Academy' in September 2008.
Like CTCs, academies are independent schools each run by a charitable trust and each one having the freedom to manage their own affairs. As an Academy our commitment to excellence remains unchanged but there are differences and the key changes are given below:
Admissions
Our admissions procedure has changed and you can no longer apply directly to the College. Brooke Weston Academy must be included as one of your three choices on the Local Authority preference form. See Admissions Page
New specialisms
Brooke Weston, in the words of our most recent inspection report, is 'an outstandingly successful college that seeks excellence in all that it does.' Our initial specialism in technology has led to information and communication technology being extremely well used in all areas of the curriculum; our recent adoption of a vocational specialism is allowing us to work with others to develop new vocational courses to offer to our students in the future. As an academy we will refine our technology specialism to concentrate on 'digital media' whilst our vocational specialism will allow us to promote 'engineering' as well as 'construction and the built environment'.
Changed funding arrangements
Brooke Weston will continue to receive its annual funding from the DfES but it would be calculated differently using a comparison with other local schools; this will not be to our disadvantage.
New buildings
On conversion Brooke Weston received a substantial capital grant with which to extend and remodel our existing buildings. This grant of approximately £4m will be used to build a new block housing a drama studio, a dance studio, a music suite and a group of classrooms to provide up to the minute facilities for digital media work. In addition, in response to the concerns expressed by many parents, the new block will contain specialist accommodation allowing us to teach cookery. The funding should also allow us to remodel some of the existing facilities, particularly those for design and technology and bring them up to date.
