Naming Conventions
When naming files it is very important that
a structure is observed, this helps with a user browsing
and searching files. As we are using a cross platform
system problems will be avoided if the following rules
are observed.
Conventions
Year group - underscore - topic - underscore - numeric
value with leading zeros - dot - three letter suffix
e.g. Y7_algebra_001.pdf
The underscores are added as separations instead of
spaces.
The leading zeros in the number are important for the way computers display
files in ascending order. A zero should only be added if to make a number three
digits long.
e.g. "...007" is correct - "...0021" is
incorrect and should be named "...021"
Please insert a dot to indicate end of file name and a three
letter suffix. The suffix is added to denote the application used
to create document. Some common suffixes are:
- pdf - Portable Document Format (Adobe Acrobat)
- doc - Microsoft Word
- dot - Microsoft Word Template
- cwk - ClarisWorks Document (also Appleworks)
- xls - Microsoft Excel Document
- ppt - Microsoft PowerPoint Document
- nbk - Interactive Whiteboard Document
- jpg - Picture file (as used on internet)
- gif - Picture file (as used on internet)
- tif - picture file format (often used when scanning)
