Young Enterprise Day

Year 9 students learned about the practicalities of business during an intensive Young Enterprise Day. The course, which is normally run over two days was condensed into a session lasting just over four hours. Robin Neighbour, development manager for Northants Young Enterprise ran the scheme for half of the Year 9 group and the other half will get a chance to take part in May. Students designed promotional posters, solved dilemmas and got expert advice in setting up and running a business.

Student, Jack Worts said: 'All of us have been put into different groups and we've got our own companies. We're Squiggly's Crisps, there's a jewellery shop, a gaming company, travel agents and other businesses.'

Mr Neighbour said: 'We talk about sole traders, partnerships and get students to understand aspects of looking after the customer. How do businesses function, what machinery and materials do they need? Where do they get the money from? It's quite punchy and fast. It's all about the world of work and learning by doing, that's our motto, so that they can actually get a full understanding of what it's like in the world of work. The students have been absolute diamonds. They are working so hard and so well I am absolutely delighted. They understand the concepts and the share trading is magic to watch, it's mayhem!'
