Self defence classes

Sgt Bob Bralee and Cpl Chris Donoghue
Self defence classes

Brooke Weston students can get world class coaching in self-defence techniques. Former kickboxing champion, Alex Barrowman is holding training sessions for students after College on Thursdays and there's space for another 15 students to join.

Mr Barrowman has been British kickboxing champion, an England International and has won over 80 open titles during the 1980s and early 1990s. Now he coaches the sport at local universities, schools and private clubs.

He said: 'These classes teach self defence using basic kickboxing techniques, physical exercise, co-ordination and focus work. They build up self esteem and hone both physical and mental skills.' A talent for kickboxing obviously runs in the family as his son, Alex, who attends Brooke Weston, has been British Champion twice and currently holds the title in his weight and age category.

Students don't need any previous experience to take part, just enthusiasm, willingness to learn and gym kit or a track-suit.

The first session comprised warm up and stretching exercises before the combatants used the focus mitts for punching practice. Future sessions (which will last for about 50 minutes) will include more complex moves including take-down (throwing) techniques. Students will get a free t-shirt when attending more than ten sessions and a certificate on completing the course. For more information contact PE teacher, Mr Gillespie or come along to training in the sports hall after school on Thursday.
