ButterflyPolite

Butterfly Polite
Butterfly Poilte in action for Year 9 students

Year 9 students got a chance to turn into music moguls during a recent project. The students had to come up with ways of publicising and promoting a local band, ButterflyPolite, as part of their media studies course.

The Leicester-based band visited the College for an afternoon of music-making and interviews to give students a taste of their take on life. Then it was up to the students to come up with imaginative ways to make them famous!

The lesson was a collaboration between English teacher, Miss Gonda, who came up with the concept, and music teacher, Mr Duguid, who came up with the band!

ButterflyPolite, comprising brothers Andy and J Douglas, Sarah Marshall and Kerry have been playing together for around five years. They described their music as being 'a reaction against cheesy 70s pop and things that pass themselves off as punk!'

Students heard the band in action then had a half-hour long Q&A session to probe such arcane subjects as the band's work history, their target audience and the three words they would use to describe themselves – 'haunting, beautiful and tolerable!'

Songwriter Andy, a self-confessed wordaholic, said he loves playing with language and if he gets a good word in Scrabble he will often incorporate it into his lyrics.

The Year 9 students then got down to work in subsequent lessons designing posters, cd covers, t-shirts and other music related merchandise. For more information on the band visit their website at www.butterflypolite.com
