Air Cadets get a different perspective on life

Air Cadets
Air Cadet Stephen Payne

Student Stephen Payne took an aerial photograph of the College during a recent flight with the Air Cadets. Stephen, who is in Year 11, regularly flies in both Viking gliders and Grob Tutor planes, taking the controls himself. The shot of Brooke Weston was taken at a height of about 1,500ft when Stephen went flying in June.

Air Cadets get to visit local RAF stations at Wittering and Wyton as well as taking part in training and outdoor activities. Now the Kettering Branch are holding an open day to attract new recruits. The Air Cadets is open to anyone aged from 13 to 20 years old. Subscriptions are £5 per month and there are meetings on Monday and Wednesday evenings.

Stephen who's been a Cadet for 18 months, joined up after an assembly about the Air Cadets at Brooke Weston. He said: 'The best thing is you get the opportunity to go flying and shooting and there's lots of new people to meet.'

The Air Cadets regularly go on outings, most recently to the museum at Duxford and they will also be spending three nights on HMS Excellence for the excellent price of just £35! They are also holding a charity collection in Kettering in aid of the RAF Association's Wings Appeal.

The Air Cadets are holding an open day at their headquarters in Northampton Road, Kettering on Sunday 16 September. Attractions at the event, which will run from 11am to 4pm, include a flight simulator, barbecue and drill display.
